FreeCell is mostly skill. Strong play comes from keeping mobility open while working toward foundation progress. FreeCell is mostly skill because every move changes how much mobility you have left.
Think of free cells and empty columns as your budget. Spend them only when you know how the cards will come back out.

Preserve Mobility First
The more free cells and open columns you keep, the longer the sequences you can move.
Avoid filling every free cell unless the move immediately opens a column or releases low cards.
Treat an empty tableau column as more valuable than a free cell because it can hold a sequence.
Before moving a card to a free cell, identify the move that will remove it later.

Unlock Low Cards Early
Aces and Twos start foundation progress and reduce the number of blockers in the tableau.
Scan for buried Aces and Twos before reorganizing high cards.
Move low cards to foundations when they do not reduce tableau mobility.
If a low card is trapped, plan the shortest sequence of moves that exposes it.

Plan Multi-Step Transfers
FreeCell rewards solving small logistics puzzles before moving the first card.
Count available free cells and empty columns before attempting a long sequence move.
Move blockers in an order that keeps at least one escape route open.
Use undo to test a transfer if the destination sequence is tight.

Use Foundations Carefully
Foundation moves are usually helpful, but some middle cards may still be needed for tableau sequencing.
Move Aces, Twos, and often Threes up early.
Pause before sending higher cards if they are useful as landing spots.
Advance foundations evenly enough that one suit does not lag and block progress.
